About Pee Wee Ellis
Pee Wee Ellis is a significant figure in the history of popular music as the creator of funk music, a prolific composer and a fine saxophonist. As a teenager he had lessons from Sonny Rollins and started his career as a professional musician when he was 14. In the sixties he became the musical director for James Brown and wrote many classic hits including Cold Sweat, the song credited with starting the funk movement, and Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud.
Pee Wee subsequently worked with Van Morrison until 1985 and then he joined up Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker to from the JB Horns. He currently plays all over the world with his own band and is constantly sought after as an arranger and soloist.
Having learnt so much from other musicians throughout a career that spans five decades he is now committed to sharing his musical experience and knowledge with others. These workshops are about “passing it on” giving both young people and more experienced players the opportunity to work alongside a true master musician.
